Archetypes

The universal patterns that shape a life.

Working with archetypes gives language and imagery to patterns that are hard to name — the recurring roles and energies that shape how you move through the world. They act like a psychic mirror, showing where you feel stuck, where you give away your power, and where your strengths live.

The concept

What are archetypes?

Archetypes are universal, symbolic patterns of behavior and personality that live in the collective unconscious. They act like a psychic mirror, helping us recognize recurring roles — like the Caregiver, the Rebel, or the Explorer — that shape how we move through the world and relate to others.

We each carry these patterns, and they show up in both their light and their shadow. Naming them gives us a way to understand ourselves more clearly — and a more conscious relationship with the energies already at work in our lives.

Why we work with them

We work with archetypes because they give language and imagery to patterns that are often hard to name. We can notice when we're in the light or the shadow of one of our archetypes. They help us see where we feel stuck, where we give away our power, and where our strengths live.

These patterns are not labels or judgments. Instead, they offer a framework for understanding how we protect ourselves, adapt, and grow over time — especially in the moments when we feel dysregulated.

The four survival archetypes

We each carry four core survival archetypes that show up in different ways throughout life. These aren't judgments — they're a framework for understanding how we protect ourselves, adapt, and grow.

The Child

The foundation of our identity. It teaches the balance between dependency and responsibility, helping us reclaim our sense of wonder and innocence while healing early wounds.

The Victim

The guardian of our boundaries. It illuminates where we surrender our power and teaches us to develop resilience, self-esteem, and the courage to advocate for ourselves.

The Prostitute

Focused on survival and integrity. This archetype challenges us to notice when we negotiate our morals or sell our talents for security — ultimately teaching faith and self-worth.

The Saboteur

The protector of our transformation. It mirrors our fear of change and shows us where we undercut our own growth, helping us develop conscious choice and intuition.

Archetype work

A different way to understand yourself

Archetype work offers a bridge between the analytical left-brain and the intuitive, symbolic right-brain. While traditional counseling often focuses on processing events chronologically, working with archetypes lets us see the “mythic” patterns of your life. Caroline Myss's framework helps identify the universal energies — like the Advocate, the Healer, the Warrior, or the Addict — that shape your choices and your path toward wholeness.

By exploring timeless symbols, inner parts, and metaphors, we deepen self-understanding and begin to see how different parts of you come forward in different moments of life.

Discovering your core archetypes

Discovering your core archetypes takes patience, honesty, and courage. It's more than learning about personality traits — it's a process of uncovering the deeper patterns that have traveled with you through life, shaping your strengths, struggles, choices, relationships, and sense of meaning.

These archetypal energies live beneath the surface of everyday roles and often point to the life lessons, power dynamics, and soul themes you're here to understand. As you learn to recognize them, you begin to see both their gifts and their shadow more clearly — opening the way for shadow work, soul growth, and a more conscious relationship with your life.
